MMMDC :: About Us

What we do
As individuals or in small groups we arrive at land for which we have obtained permission to detect from the landowner. We then spend many hours walking up and down the fields using varying types of metal detectors. We observe the country side code at all times. Should we be lucky enough to locate a metal object of interest we then dig a neat hole and bring the object to the surface. The hole is filled back and the land is left tidy. We rarely dig deeper than 8 inches (the depth of ground disturbed by the plough) and keep the hole as small as is possible. We do not disturb crop without permission from the land owner and keep our pursuit as low key as possible. At the end of a detecting session we will leave without bothering the landowner unless we have found something of significance that they wish to see or know about. (some landowners wish to see everything we find and often like to keep some of it), others do not care and only want to be informed of something unusual. We observe all rules landowners wish to impose and report artifacts to the PAS Finds Liason Officer , with permission from the landowner. The PAS FLO for Shropshire is Mr. Peter Reavill , based at Ludlow Museum . Tel No 01584877641 peter.reavill@shropshire-cc.gov.uk

What We Find
Most of the time we find items of no great interest or value. This varies from lead blobs to modern day cans .We also find a large amount of iron, Plough blades and the like. We find our fair share of buttons ,some are plain pewter, most are brass or copper. We also uncover many unidentifiable objects. We find a large amount of unrecognizable coins. These are nearly always Victorian ,Georgian and sometimes modern. Unfortunately most coins are in such a poor state they no longer have any marks on them to be able to identify them with any certainty. Although on some occasions a silver Medieval hammered coin may turn up such as the one pictured above. An example of a rare identifiable artifact is pictured below. This being a Medieval horse pendant found near Shrewsbury. One of our members also recently uncovered a cannon ball near Shrewsbury .This is believed to be from the English civil war period.
